UnitedHealthcare will be paying approximately $311 million in premium rebates under the Medical Loss Ratio provision of the Affordable Care Act of 2010. These rebates are going to approximately 119,000 group policyholders, as well as 600,000 individual policyholders. This payout represents less than 1% of the total annual premium collected by UnitedHealthcare. Rebate recipients will be receiving checks for these rebates over the next few weeks, with all checks to be distributed by August 1, 2012. Customers whose policies were not eligible for rebate because UnitedHealthcare achieved or exceeded the required MLR threshold will be receiving a mailed notice informing them of that result in the next few weeks.
