Can I Buy a Health Insurance Policy After the Annual Election Period?

BrainstormAs you know, open enrollment ended on March 31, 2014. However, individuals may still be able to apply for coverage before the next annual open enrollment if they, or someone in their family, has a qualifying life event.

Qualifying life events, which create a special enrollment period (SEP), are defined in federal law. Certain events may require certification from the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (the Exchange).

The following are some examples of common qualifying life events. This is not a complete list. There may be other events that apply.  Federal law determines whether an event is a “qualifying” event. (more…)

Final Regulations Released on the 90-day Waiting Period Limit

United States Department of LaborFor plan years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2014, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) prohibits group health plans and group health insurance issuers from applying any waiting period that exceeds 90 days.  On Feb. 20, 2014, the Departments of Labor (DOL), Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Treasury (the Departments) released final regulations on the 90-day waiting period limit.  These regulations generally finalize provisions in proposed regulations issued in March 2013, with minimal changes.
